Behavioral Health Technician

The Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) provides direct support to clients in residential addiction and mental health treatment. Techs help maintain a safe, structured, and therapeutic environment by monitoring client behavior, assisting with daily activities, supporting treatment goals, and responding to crises under the guidance of clinical and medical staff. This position is ideal for individuals passionate about recovery support, client care, and teamwork in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.

Reports to: Program Manager / Shift Supervisor

Employment Type: Full-Time / Part-Time / PRN (Specify as Needed)

Key Responsibilities

ClientSupport & Supervision

  • Supervise clients throughout the day to ensure safety and accountability
  • Monitor and document client behavior, mood, and adherence to rules
  • Assist with daily schedules, group transitions, and activities
  • Provide positive, recovery-supportive engagement with clients at all times
  • Respond to client needs, questions, or emotional distress using trauma-informed practices

Facility& Safety Monitoring

  • Complete room checks, head counts, and property searches as assigned
  • Monitor facility for safety hazards or policy violations
  • Conduct drug/alcohol screenings per schedule or suspicion
  • Assist with de-escalation and crisis response (training provided)

Documentation& Communication

  • Record accurate, objective shift notes and client observations in EMR or tracking system
  • Communicate client concerns or unusual behavior to clinical/nursing staff
  • Complete incident reports and other documentation per policy
  • Participate in shift reports and staff meetings

Transportation& Support Tasks

  • Transport clients to appointments, offsite activities, or meetings (if approved to drive)
  • Support meal service, chores, laundry, and facility cleanliness
  • Encourage and model healthy communication, conflict resolution, and coping skills

Qualitications

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Experience in behavioral  health, addiction recovery, residential care, or youth services     preferred
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record (if applicable)
  • Strong communication, organization, and emotional regulation skills
  • Ability to remain calm in high-pressure or emotionally intense situations
  • Comfortable working in a structured, team-oriented environment
  • Must pass background check, TB test, and drug screening
  • Minimum of 1 year sobriety if in recovery

Schedule and Environment

  • Facility operates 24/7 — shifts may include nights, weekends, or holidays
  • Indoor residential setting; frequent walking, standing, and light lifting
  • Regular contact with clients in various stages of emotional, medical, and mental health recovery
